Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Craig Gordon’s early passion for acoustic guitar led him to explore a variety of musical genres, from folk and rock to jazz, classical and experimental. With a natural curiosity for how things work, Craig began his journey into luthery in 1972. It was then, after reading a feature in the Arizona Republic about John Roberts and his “build your own guitar” program, that he discovered Juan Roberto Guitar Works. A visit to the quonset hut workshop on Washington Street firmly cemented his commitment to the project. After six months of commuting after school and work to the shop, the guitar was finished—and has been his constant companion ever since. Exactly forty years later, in the fall of 2012, after the intervening years saw music school, a career as a dance accompanist and composer in NYC, a move to Buffalo, having a family and a gradual shift away from music into home renovation, the everpresent obsession with luthiery finally overtook Craig, and he returned to what is now The Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery, enrolling in the 100th class. After working for many years as a guitar tech at Guitar Center, Craig has opened his own luthiery in the Black Rock section of Buffalo, where he repairs a variety of string instruments (with a focus on the guitar family) and builds his own custom guitars. The RV 50th Anniversary was built with Nicaraguan Rosewood collected by John Roberts, founder of the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery. The special timber was gifted by the school to distinguished luthiers, alumni, and manufacturers to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the school. (Read more about the project.)
