Borderland Band Camp is a 3-day summer music program (August 25-27) for middle-school and high-school teens with a BIG goal—to share the stage with professional musicians for two live performances, culminating in a spot on the Homespun Stage at Borderland Music + Arts Festival.

Through participation in the camp, our teaching artists aim to help students become better and more well-rounded musicians. But on a deeper level, we hope to instill in them a ā€œbig pictureā€ view of what a career in music is actually like in real life–the discipline, the decisions, and the nuts and bolts of everything BEYOND the art. To that end, our camp activities will be focused on giving our participants the skills they need to put together a killer set for the final Borderland Festival performance—both on and off the stage.

When is Borderland Band Camp 2025?

The camp will be held Noon–5:00 p.m. on Monday–Wednesday of the last week of August 2025 (August 25–27. Dates and times for the dress rehearsal and Borderland performances will be determined later.

Borderland Band Camp focuses on hip-hop, rap, funk, and soul music, but we remain open to virtually any style of music that the campers as a whole naturally gravitate to during the Camp. Ultimately, the campers put their set together—from covers to original music created during the master classes. In 2024, the campers played everything from Herbie Hancock to Rage Against The Machine, and debuted two songs they wrote themselves!

If you play piano, chances are the thought of singing while you’re playing has at the very least crossed your mind—whether the thought was exciting, terrifying, or anywhere in between.

Over the course of 2 weeks, students of all ages will attend 3 group workshops and have 4 one-on-one lessons with the intent of preparing a live concert at Nietzsche’s! Together, we’ll explore a variety of musical topics, including:

    • Piano and vocal techniques for piano-based singers
    • How to put together a cover song (and how to make it your own)
    • Songwriting and piano/vocal arrangement

Through participation in the camp, our teaching artists aim to help students become better and more well-rounded musicians. But on a deeper level, we hope to instill in them a ā€œbig pictureā€ view of what a career in music is actually like in real life–the discipline, the decisions, and the nuts and bolts of everything BEYOND the art. To that end, our camp activities are focused on giving our participants the skills they need to put together a killer set for the final performance—both on and off the stage.

Who is invited to the camp?

Singers and pianists of ANY AGE are welcome to join the camp! PIANO PEOPLE is a wonderful opportunity if you’re primarily either a singer or a pianist and you’re looking to add the other to make music more enjoyable for yourself. It’s also a chance to give songwriting a try, or shine a spotlight on songs you’ve already written.

What kind of music will be played?

PIANO PEOPLE is open to virtually any style of music that each student wants to play. It’s THEIR show, so it’s THEIR music.
