Introduction to African Percussion with Griffin Brady (Ages 15 & Younger)

Start your journey into the world of African drumming with a pro percussionist & touring performer (SAAKUMU Dance Troupe, Mohamed Diaby and Manding Foli Kan Don, Brian Marsalis, DJ Logic), music educator (founder of Slyboots School of Music), and executive director of Bernard Woma Dagara Music Center USA.

Explore the art of African drumming as you learn traditional techniques, expand your rhythmic vocabulary, and develop the strength and endurance needed to play hand drums in a way that is safe, healthy, and fun. This weekly music workshop also examines the relationship between drumming and dancing in Africa through hands-on instruction and breakdown of complex rhythmic structures through body movement, language and drumming.

Location

This weekly workshop is currently conducted at the Slyboots Dojo, located at 367 Main Street, East Aurora, NY 14052. You will sweat, laugh, and smile! Bring a water bottle—and an open mind. Be prepared to drum and sing!

  • Disinfected drums provided
  • Temperatures checked on arrival
  • Social distancing measures taken
  • Attendees are required to wear masks for the entire class time
  • Indoors in large space, with windows open and lots of fresh air

Ages & Skill Levels

  • This workshop is aimed at aspiring artists ages 15 and below
  • Beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels are welcome

Schedule & Price

  • This weekly workshop is currently conducted at Slyboots Dojo, located at 367 Main Street, East Aurora, NY 14052 (following CDC guidelines for safety)
  • Normally scheduled for every Wednesday from 5:00pm–6:00pm
  • The price is $25 per person
  • Each workshop is limited to 20 people

Oswego native GRIFFIN BRADY is a pro percussionist & touring performer (SAAKUMU Dance Troupe, Mohamed Diaby and Manding Foli Kan Don, Brian Marsalis, DJ Logic), music educator (founder of Slyboots School of Music), and executive director of Bernard Woma Dagara Music Center USA. Pro music credentials include:

  • Master of Arts Degree in Ethnomusicology and Music Pedagogy from Goddard College
  • Founder, teacher, and performer at the Slyboots School of Music, Art & Dance
  • Executive Director of the Bernard Woma Dagara Music Center
  • Professional Touring and Session Performer since 2002
  • SLYFEST creator, organizer, producer, and performer (2005–2017)
  • Tour manager, bus driver, chief logistician and American ambassador with SAAKUMU Dance Troupe since 2008
  • Teaching artist at Young Audiences of WNY, Artpark and Aurora Waldorf School
  • Marching band drum-line instructor at Pioneer High School
