Music making can be a spirituality without structures of power and dogma, and with more of it, our culture would be more human.”

I teach Brazilian choro-samba rhythm, guitar accompaniment and soloing, and composition. Lessons are augmented with notes on choro’s performance practice and cultural context. Students will be encouraged to participate in the weekly “roda de choro” (choro jam session) held on Saturday afternoons in Elmwood Village at Caffe Aroma.

I’ve studied and played many musics in my life—American blues and rock, Spanish classical and flamenco, Javanese and Balinese gamelan, Austro-Germanic classical, Ghanaian dance-drumming, and Brazilian choro, samba, and bossa nova. But choro captivates me. It’s a fundamentally social and playful music that also requires serious technical skill. It’s music for musicians, but more than this, the societies that have formed around it are always so cohesive and welcoming. Whether I’m in Rio, Buffalo, or some other city anywhere around the world, I know I’ll have new friends in the local choro community. It’s a fun-loving but serious and studious way of being that has shaped all of my teaching.

PhD in Music, Yale University
Teaches music theory and the choro ensemble at the University at Buffalo
Has released three full-length albums and sheet music
