    $500.00

Borderland Band Camp is a 3-day summer music program (August 25-27) for middle-school and high-school teens with a BIG goal—to share the stage with professional musicians for two live performances, culminating in a spot on the Homespun Stage at Borderland Music + Arts Festival.

Through participation in the camp, our teaching artists aim to help students become better and more well-rounded musicians. But on a deeper level, we hope to instill in them a ā€œbig pictureā€ view of what a career in music is actually like in real life–the discipline, the decisions, and the nuts and bolts of everything BEYOND the art. To that end, our camp activities will be focused on giving our participants the skills they need to put together a killer set for the final Borderland Festival performance—both on and off the stage.

When is Borderland Band Camp 2025?

The camp will be held Noon–5:00 p.m. on Monday–Wednesday of the last week of August 2025 (August 25–27. Dates and times for the dress rehearsal and Borderland performances will be determined later.

Who is invited to the Camp?

Middle-school and high-school students who were in 6th to 12th grade during the 2024–2025 school year are invited to attend.

    What instruments are invited?

    • Drums
    • Bass guitar
    • Electric guitar
    • Keyboards
    • Horns (Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, and more)
    • Vocals & Rap

Where will the Camp be held?

All group activities will take place at the Sportsmen’s Complex in Black Rock Buffalo, including The Cave, Sportsmen’s Tavern, Sportsmen’s Park, and Imagine Studios & Event Center.

What kind of music will be played?

Borderland Band Camp focuses on hip-hop, rap, funk, and soul music, but we remain open to virtually any style of music that the campers as a whole naturally gravitate to during the Camp. Ultimately, the campers put their set together—from covers to original music created during the master classes. In 2024, the campers played everything from Herbie Hancock to Rage Against The Machine, and debuted two songs they wrote themselves!

Who will be teaching at the Camp?

The full roster of teaching artists for 2025 will be announced soon, and will include:

    What’s included in the Camp?

    • 15+ hours of camp rehearsals and master classes
    • A commemorative Borderland Band Camp T-shirt
    • A live ā€œdress rehearsalā€ performance at Sportsmen’s Complex
    • A live performance on the Homespun Stage at Borderland Music + Arts Festival

    • MUSIC & LYRICS 101. Explore songwriting—the inside, the outside, and the mystery in the middle. As a songwriter, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and get lost in the possibilities. During this master class, David shines some light on what’s hiding behind the ā€œMusic & Lyrics,ā€ then draws a map to help you find your way out of those deep dark woods, including song forms, harmonic progressions, and separating ā€œthe songā€ from ā€œthe recording.ā€ Includes live song analysis (can be based on attendee suggestions, even on the spot).
    • THE SONG PYRAMID. Discover how to tap into your three sources of inspiration through deep song analysis—the key to songwriting and a deeper understanding of YOUR creative self. Includes live song analysis (can be based on attendee suggestions decided prior to the master class).

    Custom Master Classes for YOU

Don’t see a master class that you want? Our artists are ready to adjust one of their available master classes, or create a whole new master class to suit YOUR needs (within their realm of expertise, of course).

Songwriting is the center of my musical universe.

I’ve been playing music since I was four years old, and teaching music lessons on a variety of instruments, pursuits and styles for at least 25 years. And I’m still a big believer in the fundamentals—discipline, technique, practicing, music theory… no matter what kind of musician you want to be, it isn’t fun if you can’t play. But songwriting is the center of my musical universe. It holds it all together for me—constantly giving me the focus, meaning, and purpose I need to return to the well over and over again. There’s only one feeling in the world better than finishing a song, and that’s starting the next one.

    My Favorite Things to Teach

    • Instruments: Acoustic Guitar, Piano, Keyboard & Synth, MIDI, Vocals
    • Pursuits: Songwriting, Composition & Arranging, Music Theory, Performance, Recording & Audio Production, Scoring
    • Styles: Indie, Singer/Songwriter, Folk, Classical

    Ages & Skill Levels

    • I work best with students ages 15 and up, but will work with younger students under the right circumstances
    • Beginner, intermediate, and advanced students are welcome

Join Ann Philippone and David Cloyd this July for a music camp for piano-based singers and songwriters, culminating in a live performance at the legendary Nietzsche's.
    $300.00

A Buffalo Music Club music camp for piano-based singers and songwriters

Only 10 seats available | Sign up today!

If you play piano, chances are the thought of singing while you’re playing has at the very least crossed your mind—whether the thought was exciting, terrifying, or anywhere in between.

Over the course of 2 weeks, students of all ages will attend 3 group workshops and have 4 one-on-one lessons with the intent of preparing a live concert at Nietzsche’s! Together, we’ll explore a variety of musical topics, including:

    • Piano and vocal techniques for piano-based singers
    • How to put together a cover song (and how to make it your own)
    • Songwriting and piano/vocal arrangement

Through participation in the camp, our teaching artists aim to help students become better and more well-rounded musicians. But on a deeper level, we hope to instill in them a ā€œbig pictureā€ view of what a career in music is actually like in real life–the discipline, the decisions, and the nuts and bolts of everything BEYOND the art. To that end, our camp activities are focused on giving our participants the skills they need to put together a killer set for the final performance—both on and off the stage.

Who is invited to the camp?

Singers and pianists of ANY AGE are welcome to join the camp! PIANO PEOPLE is a wonderful opportunity if you’re primarily either a singer or a pianist and you’re looking to add the other to make music more enjoyable for yourself. It’s also a chance to give songwriting a try, or shine a spotlight on songs you’ve already written.

What kind of music will be played?

PIANO PEOPLE is open to virtually any style of music that each student wants to play. It’s THEIR show, so it’s THEIR music.

When is PIANO PEOPLE Music Camp?

    • Group Workshop #1: Monday, July 14 @ 4–6:00 p.m.
    • Group Workshop #2: Monday, July 21 @ 4–6:00 p.m.
    • Group Workshop #3: Saturday, July 26 @ 4–6:00 p.m.
    • One-on-One Lessons: Each student will have four 1-hour one-on-one lessons (2 per week), which will be held in between the workshops and scheduled in the lead-up to the camp
    • Final Performance: The concert will be held on Sunday, July 27 from 4–6:00 p.m. as part of Ann Philippone’s Piano Party at Nietzsche’s (open to the public)

Where will the camp be held?

    • Group workshops will take place at Ann Philippone’s studio in North Buffalo
    • One-on-one lessons will take place at Ann Philippone’s studio in North Buffalo and David Cloyd’s studio in North Buffalo
